Even the Catherine Zeta-Jones or Jennifer Aniston amongst us have experienced committing some of the worst first-date crimes and wanted the earth to swallow them alive. In this case, prevention is also better than cure. So before you step out that front door, keep these in mind. Just a few tips, in no particular order.

No excess baggage, please. Don’t ever, ever bring up any of your past boyfriends, flings, or dates. Never even skim the rim of the subject. Talk about anything but that. You’re just crushing any potential of the two of you going any further. You wouldn’t want him talking about the other women he’s dated before, would you?

EAT! There’s nothing wrong with showing how much of an appetite you have. Usually, women on the first date tend to eat as little as nothing. Which is so wrong because you’ll end up really dizzy and the man you’re on a date with will think that you’re not really enjoying his company…even if you really like him. A man loves a woman with an appetite.

No talking about the second date. Not just yet. If he’s not so much into you as a potential girlfriend, then you might just be cornering him into asking you out again, when he actually would rather just hang out with you as a friend. Make sure you don’t hint either. Just enjoy your time together and just let everything glide. When the evening comes to an end, just tell him you had a great time. Then the ball will be in his court. This works too if you didn’t enjoy yourself that much and you’re not so into him.

Don’t pretend to be someone you’re not. If you’re not into the whole candlelit, formal affair, then feel free to tell him beforehand that you’re not that type of person. If you’d feel more comfortable just talking over coffee on a lazy weekend afternoon instead of feeling all stiff in a dress and trying not to spill any while you enjoy your wine, then go get that caffeine fix. Remember, it’s all about being yourself.

Most of all, just enjoy. Even if things don’t go the way both of you would want them to be, then at least you’ve made a new friend.
